Hello all!  This week we are going to look at a super food called Irish Sea Moss.  This powerful nutrient has recently gained some notoriety due to a famous rapper named Nipsey Hussle.  He was working on a  documentary about a well known herbalist and healer named Dr. Sebi .  Dr. Sebi was known for teaching specific health protocols that involved Irish Sea Moss.  Why you wonder?  Because it is a very nutrient dense food and can do wonders for the body.  Let’s find out more!

Irish Sea Moss

Irish Sea Moss is a type of red algae found mostly in the Caribbean as well as on the coastline of Ireland.  It is packed with minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and iodine.  It’s rich mineral profile allows for various health benefits because minerals are the building blocks for all chemical processes in the body.  When you consume a food that is charged with minerals like this algae, you are receiving bio-available minerals, making them readily available for the body to utilize.   The benefits continue…

Skin/Digestion/Immune System

It is considered a mucilaginous food.  This means it is a gelatinous food that helps repair and strengthen mucus membranes.  For this reason many people use it to help improve skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and more.  It can be highly beneficial to the inner lining of the digestive tract, helping boost beneficial bacterial and over-all better digestion of food.  This will also help strengthen the immune system!  Dr. Sebi also talked about the importance of Burdock Root for skin and digestion.  This herb can be very complimentary to Irish Sea Moss.

Thyroid Health

Irish Sea Moss naturally contains different iodine compounds.  This is a mineral that the thyroid needs in order to function.  Our modern diet is not rich with iodine, making it very common among mineral deficiencies. This leads to thyroid disorders and can throw off proper hormone levels in the body.  This will eventually produce many various unwanted symptoms.  That’s why it is important to get your iodine levels checked and if they are low– consider supplementing with a natural source of iodine like Irish Sea Moss.  Sea Moss also contains selenium another mineral needed for thyroid function and hormone production.  Dr Sebi also paired sea moss with Bladderwrack, another type of algae that naturally contains iodine.   Both are great for thyroid and hormone health!

Another benefit is that it can help support bone and joint health.  This is because, you guessed it, it’s high mineral content.  It can also boost collagen production in the body which will help give flexibility and vitality to the joints and fascia.
