Elite Health Tip!
Hello again! This week we are going to take a look into digestive enzymes. They occur naturally in our body, but as our bodies age we seem to produce less enzymes over time. That’s why supplementing with digestive enzymes can really help break down your food in a more comfortable manner… what do we mean by all of this? Let’s take a look…
What are digestive enzymes?
From the moment we put food in our mouths, our saliva glands excrete amylase which begins the digestive process– helping our food to begin to liquefy so we receive all the nutrients possible. Once food arrives in the stomach, more amylase is released. As the broken down food travels through our system, other enzymes join in the process, allowing proper nutrients to be released into the blood stream and delivered to the appropriate place. Specific enzymes break down specific molecules such as– the enzyme lactase helps break down the milk sugar lactose.
Supplementing with Enzymes:
Adding a digestive enzyme complex before, during, or after eating food can help digestive issues such as:
- Acid reflux
- Lactose or gluten intolerance
It’s important that all molecules of food are broken down properly in order to absorb all nutrients your body needs from your food.
Fun Facts on Digestive Enzymes:
- Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain
- Bromelain can help with general pain
- Papaya contains the enzymes papain
